Head of Children’s Services
After training as a social worker almost 20 years ago, Darren now works as a senior manager in children’s services for Pembrokeshire County Council. His day to day responsibilities can be challenging but he knows he’s making a difference in his community.
Question 1: Why did you choose to work with children?
“It was always my intention to work in adult services, but I did a placement in children’s services and found that I absolutely loved working with children and their families and that’s why I’ve never left.”
Question 2: What is the most challenging aspect of your role?
“Decision making at my level is difficult as it dictates the direction of a young person’s life. But the reward comes from seeing families succeed and children developing in safe homes with safe care arrangements.”
Question 3: What advice would you give to anyone considering social care?
“Give it a try. If your values are seeing people being treated equally, people being supported and empowered to achieve better things to improve their lives then social care could be for you.”
